At SVA, second year design students take Typography 1, where they are introduced to the world of letters. But with the morass of texts and opinions and blogs about typography, I wanted my students to have something truly unique and simple reference guide. In An Introduction to the Art of Typography, students are presented with basic terminology concerning parts of a letterform and copy setting, general dos and don’ts, a list of notable designers throughout history, and a reference list of other books and websites in order to delve deeper. The package includes a USB drive which contains seven pivotal typefaces from history (Garamond, Baskerville, Bodoni, Akzidenz Grotesk, Franklin Gothic, Futura & Univers.)
